2009 Spring Summit Boston

22 - 24 April 2009: Joint Pack2Go Europe - FPI Summit in Boston.

On 22-24 April 2009 Pack2Go Europe and the Foodservice Packaging Institute in the USA met in Boston, Massachussets at the Four Seasons Hotel for a fifth joint meeting. In practice, this was the first time that the two associations met since the founding of Pack2Go Europe (for the first four meetings the European side was represented by the European Food Service and Packaging Assocation).

During the general session on Thursday morning, April 23, attendees participated in FPI’s Foodservice Packaging Advisory Council session. The theme was “The Process of Packaging Development,” with keynote speakers from  HAVI Global Solutions, packaging supply chain partner for McDonald’s Corporation, and Boxer, McDonald’s packaging design consultancy. Advisory council members offered their own comments on the topic, followed by an interactive discussion with attendees. Members of the advisory council included :

  • Troy Acosta, senior director of supply chain management, SODEXO;
  • Jane Chase, vice president of packaging research and development, U.S. Foodservice;
  • Marsha Cox, supply chain manager, Fazoli’s System Management, LLC;
  • Robert Dennen, senior manager, engineering, Pizza Hut;
  • Stan Dorsey, vice president of research and development, Focus Brands Inc.;
  • Ron Ehrhardt, regional vice president, Canteen Corporation;
  • Earl Engleman, senior vice president, corporate strategic sourcing, Bunzl Distribution North America;
  • Joseph Hellyar, supply chain manager non foods, Dunkin Brands Inc.;
  • Yvonne Macon, senior manager, HDH procurement and contracts, University of California San Diego; and
  • Christopher Shepardson, vice president, merchandising and sourcing, SYSCO Corporation.

The two sessions on Friday, April 24, focused on the theme of “Turbulence in a Double ‘E’ World: How the economy and the environment affect global foodservice packaging.” First, attendees heard a presentation on the state of the global economy, followed by Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Ernest L. Arbuckle professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, who gave attendees her thoughts on how to survive this recession – and emerge triumphant. The second topic of the day was the environment, with North American and European regulatory updates, as well as presentations on carbon footprinting by Scott Kaufman, U.S. project manager at Carbon Trust, and sustainable packaging by Julian Carroll, managing director at EUROPEN, The European Organization for Packaging and the Environment. In addition to the meetings, had a chance to network with their peers during a truly memorable tour of historic Boston, an evening at the Harvard Club and a clambake on Beacon Hill.

This summit was opened to members and guests of Pack2Go Europe and FPI only. The presentations are now available in the Members-Only area of the website.
